Hydrogen as primary energy carrier

Corporate story

We, just like you and many other people in the world, recognise that a change is necessary.

To be more precise, we need to change our approach towards how we treat our earth. We need to re-evaluate our energy system and speed up the energy transition.

We believe that a combination of energy sources is needed for timely delivery and affordable costs.

But first, what are our needs?

We need energy. Every day, all day and at the exact moment that pleases us. And it must be at an affordable price. Most people aren’t even aware that they have this need, nor how this need is met. You just turn on the light, take a shower, get your cup of coffee, start your car, get on the train, start your computer, use the oven, use your phone, fly all over the world, and so on and on. All day we use energy, even if we do not realise it. It is usually taken for granted that energy is just available.

In our current system, our energy needs are met by fossil fuels. But these days we want to stop using fossil fuels, as soon as possible. Therefore, a lot of investments have been made in renewable solutions, amongst others electricity generation from wind and solar. Electricity generated by wind and solar energy is growing fast, which is great, but it has some flaws. There is a grid overload and the infrastructure needs to be expanded, which will result in significant additional costs as well as visual and spatial impact.

Supply and demand alignment

But it also presents a problem with the supply and demand alignment. With the current setup, there is a mismatch between production and usage. This leads to expensive energy and inefficient usage. Thus, it doesn’t meet our needs entirely: it is not always available at the right time, at the right place in the right volumes, which makes it at times inefficient and costly.

Energy mix

We need an energy mix that meets our energy needs. While researching the production of green hydrogen directly in a wind turbine, we learned every detail about green hydrogen, the hydrogen chain, and how to get it from a to z. We see an opportunity that will solve many problems and is sustainable as well as cost-effective. With this directly produced green hydrogen, a lot of inefficiencies are solved in the production process as well as in the transportation and delivery. And it is easily stored.

With this solution, we can offer sustainable energy at the right time, for the right price, all day, every day, and everywhere.

Extra benefits

With the production of green hydrogen directly at the source, several other climate goals can be achieved in a cost-effective way. As our solution is scalable, production costs decline fast. For instance, if we place offshore hydrogen wind turbines instead of ‘normal’ wind turbines that deliver electricity, we achieve the following:

  1. Production of 2.1 times more energy per km2 (so we would need less room on the sea floor, less interruption in the sea life, and maritime movements, and
  2. Realisation of 2.4 times more CO2-reduction (realising those climate goals much quicker!), and
  3. Production of 3 times more hydrogen (compared to first delivering electricity to the grid and then converting it into hydrogen), and
  4. Limited spatial & visual impact (to get the energy onshore, we do not need large transformer spaces, grid connections, electricity stations etc. We simply use (existing) pipelines in the sea that continue their route underneath the ground), and
  5. Less subsidy is required, and
  6. Long-term security of supply is covered.

Also, green hydrogen can be used in many places in the Netherlands that are now struggling with the nitrogen rules and regulations, including building sites, farms and the mobility market.

Our models, experience and studies support the claims above. Do you want to read more about our technological knowledge and expertise? Want to know how we can realise the situation above? Please read our extensive blog or a first introduction on our knowledge.
